WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team brings its four-game winning streak into a big three-game series against Creighton this weekend at Shirley Povich Field. Due to inclement weather forecasts, the weekend schedule has been changed and the two teams will now play a doubleheader on Friday evening and a single game Saturday.
First pitch in game one on Friday is set for 5 p.m. with game two starting approximately 30 minutes after its conclusion. Saturday's series finale is still scheduled for 6 p.m. Live stats and a video stream for all three games will be available at GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas (17-27, 5-4 BIG EAST) are coming off a 6-1 win at UMBC on Wednesday night. Four Hoya pitchers did not allow an earned run and
Anthony Redfern (Andover, Mass. / Phillips Andover) picked up his first career victory as he fired 5.0 innings and struck out four.
Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga. / Lovett School) was on base three times with two walks and a hit by pitch and scored three runs.
Tony Barreca (Long Grove, Iowa / North Scott) was on base three times with a walk, single and double and drove in a run while
Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Norwalk) doubled twice and drove in a run.
On Monday,
Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn. / St. Thomas Academy / IMG Academy) was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after he set career highs with 8.0 innings and 14 strikeouts in Saturday's 2-1 victory over St. John's. He allowed just one unearned run on seven hits and three walks and his 14 strikeouts surpassed his previous career high of 12 which he set two weeks ago against Villanova. Morreale struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and had multiple strikeouts in seven of his eight frames.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas / Emery Weiner) was also selected to the BIG EAST Honor Roll as he was was the lone reliever used out of the bullpen by the Hoyas over the weekend, appearing in all three games and registering three saves. He did not allow a run in 4.0 innings pitched, only allowing three base runners and striking out five. His three saves give him a BIG EAST-leading eight saves on the season.
The honors come after the Hoyas swept a three-game series over St. John's for the first time in program history and the series win was the first by Georgetown over the Red Storm since 2009.
For the season, McCabe leads the Hoyas with a .317 (51 for 161) batting average and is second with 21 RBIs.
