Hoyas to Face Providence in First Round of BIG EAST Tournament

WASHINGTON. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team will face the Providence College Friars in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep on Friday at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.  The game between the ninth-seeded Hoyas and the eighth-seeded Friars will tip at noon ET.

About the Hoyas
  • The Hoyas (5-24) earned the No. 9 seed after beating out tenth-seeded Xavier in the tiebreaker.  After unprecedented ties in league play for the 3-7 positions as well as 9-10, the Blue & Gray held the RPI tiebreaker over the Musketeers. 
  • Georgetown is coming off of a tough 95-78 loss at Creighton on Sunday to close out the regular season.
  • Graduate student Taylor Barnes led the way with 24 points, while senior Marvellous Osagie-Erese had a solid performance with a career-high 17 points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds.
  • Senior Anita Kelava managed 16 points to round out the Hoyas in double figures, and sophomore Cassandra Gordon had a team-high eight rebounds along with five points.
  • Barnes leads the team in scoring with 12.6 ppg.
  • Kelava has 7.3 rpg as well as an impressive 49 blocks to rank second in the league in both blocks (49) and blocks per game (1.69).
 
About the Friars
  • Providence is 12-18 overall and finished 3-15 in league play to earn the eighth seed outright.
  • The squad is led by Mary Baskerville who is the lone Friar averaging double figures with 12.3 ppg to her credit.
 
Series Information
  • Georgetown is 37-30 all-time against the Friars and 1-6 in the BIG EAST Tournament.
  • The squads split the series this year with the Hoyas picking up the 62-53 win at home, but the Friars defeating Georgetown 62-55 this past Friday in Rhode Island. 
  • This will be the second-consecutive season that the squads have met three times after the teams played two games during the regular season and had a third round WNIT matchup.  Georgetown held the 3-0 edge in that series.
 
BIG EAST Tournament History
  • Georgetown is 16-33 all-time at the BIG EAST Tournament and 10-10 in the first round.
  • The Hoyas are 2-2 at Wintrust Arena.
