WASHINGTON – Georgetown University No. 8/9 men's lacrosse team scored 16 unanswered goals and held No. 16/18 Villanova scoreless for the final 50:51 minutes of the game in a 16-1 victory in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon in the 2021 season opener.
Jake Carraway scored eight goals and added an assist as eight different Hoyas found the back of the net on the day.
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Carraway's eight goals move him just one shy of the Georgetown career goal record of 153, held by former teammate Daniel Bucaro.
- With his nine points on the day, Carraway now has 223 in his career and is just 13 away from tying the program record of 236 set by Greg McCavera (1996-99).
- Carraway's eight goals are fourth-most in a game at Georgetown and his nine points are tied for fifth most in program history.
- Seven other Hoyas scored as well, including Graham Bundy Jr. with a pair. Nicky Petkevich added a goal and an assist while James Reilly and Gibson Smith both had a goal and an assist.
- Declan McDermott, Dylan Hess and Niko Gekas each tallied a lone goal.
- Peter Thompson had three assists to lead the Blue & Gray, TJ Haley added a pair and Mason Bonnie chipped in another.
- Defensively, Georgetown held the Wildcats scoreless for the final 50:51 of the game after surrendering the game's first goal at the 9:09 mark in the first quarter.
- The Hoyas were credited with 11 caused turnovers including three from Alex Mazzone and two each from James Donaldson and Smith.
- Owen McElroy put together another solid game between the pipes, allowing just one goal in 49:57 of action and collecting four ground balls in the win.
- The Hoyas won 12 of 20 (.600) on faceoffs with Reilly going 8 for 14 (.571) on the day.
GEORGETOWN NOTES
- Georgetown's +15 goal differential is the 16th largest in program history.
- The Hoyas have allowed one goal in a game twice before, a 16-1 victory over Catholic in 1980 and a 9-1 win against Vermont in 2005.
- Georgetown's previous lowest goals allowed against Villanova was two in a 19-2 victory in 1998.
VILLANOVA NOTES
- Matt Campbell scored the lone goal of the game for the Wildcats.
- Will Vitton collected six saves in the three quarters of action.
- Patrick Kennedy led VIllanova with three ground balls.
