Hoyas Take Down No. 6 Denver 11-10 in Overtime Thriller

WASHINGTON – Junior midfielder Declan McDermott's game-winning goal with 1:08 remaining in overtime gave Georgetown University's 10th-ranked men's lacrosse team its first regular season victory against Denver in program history with a 11-10 win on Saturday. The victory avenges an earlier season loss to the sixth-ranked Pioneers and puts them  atop the league standings.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dylan Watson led the Hoyas (9-1, 8-1 BIG EAST) with four goals on the afternoon while McDermott had a pair.
  • Dylan Hess tallied a goal and two assists, Graham Bundy Jr. added a goal and assisted on McDermott's game winner, Nicky Petkevich and goalie Owen McElroy were both credited with two assists, and Jake Carraway, Zachary Geddes and Alex Mazzone each had lone goals. Wallace Halpert added an assist in transition as well.
  • James Reilly had a stellar day at the 'X', winning 16-of-24 (.667) of his faceoffs against two of the nation's most dangerous faceoff specialists. He added nine ground balls while Gibson Smith added four and created chaos and ground ball opportunities on the wings.
  • Defensively, McElroy hauled in 14 saves between the pipes as the Hoya defense held Denver to just one goal in the final 21:01 of the game.

DENVER NOTES
  • Ethan Walker led the Pioneers (8-3, 7-1 BIG EAST) with three goals and an assist while Lucas Cotler and Jack Hannah added two goals each.
  • In goal, Jack Thompson had a strong game for the Pios with 15 saves.

OF NOTE
  • The win is the first for the Hoyas against Denver in the regular season. Georgetown had defeated the Pioneers twice before in the postseason – in the finals of the 2018 and 2019 BIG EAST Championship.
  • The Hoyas assisted on eight of their 11 goals and have now tallied assists on 38 of their last 41 goals during the month of April.
  • Reilly's 16 faceoff wins give him 399 for his career – one shy of becoming only the fourth Hoya with 400 career wins in program history.

NEXT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown remains home to host Providence on Saturday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m.. The showdown will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
