Hoyas Clinch Share of BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Regular Season Title

Box Score WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's men's lacrosse won at least a share of the 2021 BIG EAST regular season championship with a 14-5 victory over visiting Providence in the league finale on Saturday. The No. 8/7 Hoyas finish out the conference slate with a 9-1 record, guaranteeing at least a shared title with Denver who has one BIG EAST game remaining.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Defensively, the Hoyas held their eighth opponent of the season to fewer than 10 goals and the fourth with no more than five.
  • Georgetown had 11 caused turnovers, including two each from Alex Mazzone and Zachary Geddes from the defensive midfield. Mazzone had four ground balls on the day, as did Joe LiCalzi, James Reilly and Carraway.

PROVIDENCE NOTES
  • Ryan Nawrocki led the Friars with two goals and an assist. He was the only Providence player to find the back of the net twice.
  • In goal, Toby Burgdorf had 15 saves.

OF NOTE
  • The win clinches at least a share of the regular season title, its first in the BIG EAST. Georgetown had previously won ECAC regular season titles in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. The Hoyas are still the reigning back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament champions from 2018 and 2019.
  • McElroy's 24 saves are the second most in a game at Georgetown since game-by-game records were tracked in 1980. Only Georgetown Hall of Fame goalie Jim Kenny has had more – 29 against Drexel in 1989.
  • This marks just the seventh time a Hoya has collected at least 20 saves in a game and the most in BIG EAST play. McElroy joins Kenny twice, Nick Marrocco, Jim Coale and Scott Schroeder twice to achieve the feat.

NEXT FOR THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown travels to Baltimore to face Loyola to close out the regular season on Thursday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. The showdown will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
