WASHINGTON – Georgetown University seniors Elissa Barbosa and Jessica Cusi have been selected as captains of the volleyball team, as announced by Head Coach David Heller on Thursday. The duo has played extensively during their time on the Hilltop and looks to provide essential leadership to guide a team that has not played a match in 642 days because of COVID-19.
 
"Jess and Elissa have given so much to this program in their time on the Hilltop, and I am glad their peers have recognized their efforts and sacrifices," Heller said. "Both of them provide leadership in different areas and find ways to create energy and inspire their teammates. I'm really proud of the work they have put in and excited to see where they will lead the team this year."
 
Elissa Barbosa
Senior, Outside Hitter

• Played in 203 sets over the course of 60 matches in her time at Georgetown.
• Had a breakout season in 2019, averaging 2.17 kills per set to go with 2.18 digs per set.
• Has also recorded 26 assists, 26 service aces and 25 blocks in her career.
• Selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Bulldog Invite and the Hoya Invitational in 2019.
• Named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team every year on the Hilltop.

Senior, Libero

• Played in 230 sets over the course of 61 matches in her time with the Blue & Gray.
• Led the Hoyas with 3.53 digs per set in 2019 and averages 3.03 dps over her career.
• Has added 242 assists and 53 service aces in her career.
• Selected to the All-Tournament Team at the Bulldog Invite and the William & Mary Colonial Classic.
• Named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team every year at Georgetown.

"Jess has been a vocal leader for the back court and encouraged our younger student-athletes to come in for extra work to help them progress in skills. She would stay after and serve for them or run the serving machine in order to help her teammates."
 
Georgetown opens the 2021 season at the DC Challenge this weekend, hosting American on Friday before traveling to take on Howard and GW on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

All Georgetown Volleyball home matches are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. In accordance with Washington, D.C. regulations, masks are required for attendance at all indoor events on campus.
