Hoyas Host Navy in NCAA First Round

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer squad will take on the United States Naval Academy in the NCAA Championship First Round on Thursday at noon at Shaw Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ through NCAA.com with Hoya alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser on the call in their 18th season.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown won its eighth BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in program history earlier this season.
  • In the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP, top-seeded Georgetown defeated fourth-seeded Butler 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals on two goals from freshman Jack Panayotou.
  • In the championship game on Sunday, the Blue & Gray fell 3-0 to sixth-seeded Creighton. Panayotou and seniors Aidan Rocha and Daniel Wu all earned spots on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
  • The Blue & Gray has been in the national rankings much of the year currently sitting at No. 14 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 21 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com poll. The team is also ranked No. 23 in the RPI.
  • Rocha earned BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors marking the fourth-consecutive season a Hoya has won it, while Wu captured Defensive Player of the Year as GU managed its fifth-consecutive defensive honor. Rocha and Wu were also named First Team All-BIG EAST.
  • Juniors Ryan Schewe and Marlon Tabora earned spots on the second team, while GU boasted a league-high three people on the third team including junior captain Kenny Nielsen, sophomore Kieran Sargeant and freshman Jack Panayotou.
  • Additionally, the Georgetown staff received BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the second-consecutive season.
  • Tabora and Panayotou currently lead the team in scoring with 17 points apiece. Panayotou has tallied seven goals with three assists, while Tabora has five goals and seven assists. Freshman Jacob Murrell boasts 14 points on five goals and four assists to round out the top three.
About the Mids
  • An 83rd-minute goal from freshman forward A.J. Schuetz, in Saturday's Patriot League Championship game earned Navy its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2013 and the program's second NCAA berth since joining the league in 1991.
  • The program has a record of 15-10-0 overall record in NCAA Tournament games and going 8-3-0 in opening-round contests.
  • David Jackson was named the 2022 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year after tallying a team-high six goals to go along with three assists in 16 games played.
  • Jackson was one of four Midshipmen to pick up all-league honors, as Jackson was named to the All-Patriot League First Team along with defender JD Wagner, while forward Baba Kallie was picked to the All-Patriot League Second Team and midfielder Noah Ward received All-Patriot League Third Team accolades.
