Women's Rowing Posts Mixed Results in Weekend Regattas

WASHINGTON – The women's rowing team began its spring slate of regattas this weekend, going up against tough competition in Washington, D.C. and Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
The lightweight crew faced Princeton University, the defending IRA 1V8+ champions, in the Class of 2006 Cup held on the Potomac River on Saturday, March 26. The Hoyas fell to the Tigers in the varsity 8+ race, dropping to 1-17 all time in Class of 2006 Cup competitions. Princeton also came out on top in the V4+ and V2x races on Saturday afternoon.
The Hoyas saw a field of 16 teams at the Doc Hosea and finished among the middle of the pack. Georgetown openweights qualified for two petite finals (1V8+, 1V4+) and two third finals (2V8+, 2V4+) in the regatta.
 
Results – Lightweight vs. Princeton
  • In the first varsity 8+, Princeton sped down the course and finished in 6:28.5 and claimed victory to the Class of 2006 Cup. The Hoyas trailed slightly behind, completing the race in 6:41.6.
  • Princeton finished first in the varsity 4+, with Georgetown crossing the finish line nearly 50 seconds after the Tigers.
  • The Georgetown doubles pair finished in 10:19.0, completing the course 2:12.1 after Princeton's pair crossed the finish line.
 
Results – Openweight at Doc Hosea Invitational
  • In the first varsity 8+, Georgetown placed fourth (6:43.65) after finishing behind Rutgers (6:31.52), Tulsa (6:36.28) and Northeastern (6:39.57). Bucknell (6:47.70) and Drexel (6:50.54) rounded out Heat 1.
  • Georgetown placed sixth in Heat 1 of the second varsity 8+, finishing the course in 7:14.25.  
  • The Hoyas finished in third place in Heat 2 of the varsity 4+ with a time of 7:53.49. Penn (7:27.01) and Notre Dame (7:37.39) beat Georgetown in that heat and the Hoyas moved on to the petite finals in the V4+.
  • Georgetown's second varsity 4+ placed fifth (8:37.11) in Heat 1 of the second varsity 4+, 48.12 seconds behind first-place Navy (7:48.99).
 
Up Next
Both squads will be in competition on Saturday, April 2. The lightweight crew will face Harvard and Princeton in the Class of 1999 Cup hosted in Princeton, New Jersey. The openweights will head to Philadelphia to compete in the 39th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
