Hoya Lightweights Have Historic Day Against Penn and Princeton

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's lightweight rowing team traveled to New Jersey Saturday for a weekend tilt against Princeton and Penn. The Hoyas sent three varsity boats to compete in three different races on Lake Carnegie. The first varsity boat and third varsity boats both took first in their respective races marking the first time this has happened in the past 10 years.

On the Record
  • "The team has worked through strep and the flu that has been going around campus and was finally at full strength this week. The G150 crews were able to execute an aggressive plan and get our bows out for the victory."
How it Happened
  • With a light crosswind for the first two 2000-meter races, the second varsity boat started it off as Georgetown crossed the finish line in third in a time of 6:02.6.
  • The Blue & Gray followed that up with an impressive showing in the first varsity race as the fifth-ranked Hoyas finished two full seconds ahead of Penn (5:49.5) making a strong push in the second quarter of the race to clock a 5:47.5. The squad also defeated fourth-ranked Princeton which came in third clocking in at 6:02.6.
  • The wind turned to a tailwind for the third race which the Hoyas, competing down a few seats, dominated in finishing with a time of 5:56.6 to defeat both Princeton (6:01.3) and Penn (6:17.6).
Up Next
  • The Hoyas are back in action on Sunday, May 15 for the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts. There may be an event next weekend as well. The heavyweights return to the water next weekend to compete against Penn in Ithaca, New York.
