WASHINGTON – The Georgetown track & field team continued the outdoor regular season over the weekend at the Florida Relays, a meet that was moved around for weather in Gainesville, Florida. The Blue & Gray saw a number of top 10 performances at the abbreviated meet.
DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD ALTON McKENZIE
"Outdoor season brings unpredictable weather but the opportunity to prepare and focus on is what is in our control and Florida Relays certainly drove home that lesson. Friday's weather was perfect and accounted for Josh Paige running a very competitive 200m to dip under 21 seconds for the first time; 20.96 being the third fastest time ever run by a Hoya. Saturday's weather didn't prevent
Melissa Riggins from running one of the best 800's run by a Hoya (6th fastest in school history); her 2:03.50 had her third at the meet and she's currently ranked third nationally.
KC Ashiogwu also had a great effort in the 400m running a new PB of 55.14 to win her heat and finish 10th overall. Our men's 800m also had good efforts; season opener for
Jack Salisbury running 1:49.4 is good preparation as he gets ready to run a 1500m this upcoming week. We're looking forward to building on the efforts from Florida as we go into April."
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
- Melissa Riggins ran in a fast first heat in the women's 800-meter run, one of just six competitors who were able to break one minute on the first 400 meters. Over the bell lap, the freshman was able to move up one spot and finish third with a time of 2:03.50, a personal best and sixth-fastest in program history.
- In the triple jump, Eni Akinniyi claimed third with a 12.09m (39' 8") mark on her second jump. It matches her season best from the indoor season.
- KC Ashiogwu won her heat in the women's 400-meter dash, clocking 55.14, to finish 10th overall. The time was a collegiate best for the sophomore competing in her first outdoor season.
- On the men's side, Jack Salisbury finished ninth in the 800-meter run. Competing in the first and fastest of three heats, Salisbury was with the front of the pack as he was one of four to get through 400 meters under 53 seconds. However, as the bell lap hit and the field hit its stride, Salisbury couldn't get his positioning and finished ninth in the heat and overall in the event with a time of 1:49.44.
- In the second heat of the 800-meter run, Tim McInerney (1:50.32) and Matthew Rizzo (1:50.79) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the heat and 11th and 13th overall, respectively.
