2022 Positional Preview: Offensive Line

WASHINGTON – With the 2022 slate around the corner and the Georgetown University football team opening the season at Marist on September 3, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each position with this edition featuring the team's offensive line.

"We're very excited about the group we have this season, returning a good number of players who have some game experience." Assistant Head Coach Alex Kolt said. "Everyone, with the exception of the freshmen, had the benefit of practicing in the spring and it was really important for the offensive line in order to get the group to gel and come together."

The Hoyas bring back a veteran group of guys who have played significant time on the Hilltop with All-Patriot League Second Team selection Talati Polamalu, 2022 captain Neal Azar, Spencer Harris, Mac Hollensteiner, Luke Popma and Sam Telesa. The group of six have accumulated over 90 games of experience between them.

Georgetown's offensive line protected the quarterbacks well in 2021, finishing the season ranked second in passing yards per game (253.7) while sitting third in total offense (333.7) and points per game (19.0).

"There is a level of confidence that comes with experience and we are fortunate to return six players who started games last season," Kolt added. "As a whole, we have one and a half to two times as much experience coming into this year as we did last year."

The Blue & Gray's offensive protection will feature upperclassmen Greg Johnson, Kaysen Mahuka-Kaawa, Stanford Maison, Max Norton and Richie Pinomi returning and will be vital to the offense's protective unit.

Georgetown has added depth on the line with several newcomers who will look to make an immediate impact in their first collegiate season in freshmen Michael Burton, Drake Hamlin, Losini Maka, Mansfield Owsley, Joshua Sauickie and Trevor Swan.

"I think there is a lot of depth and a lot of talent with this whole group." Kolt said. "We know games are won and lost at the line, and I think we can take some huge strides forward. We know as an offense and as a team, we go as far as the guys on the line of scrimmage carry on us."
