Top-Seeded Hoyas Face Fifth-Seeded UConn in BIG EAST Semifinal

WASHINGTON – The No. 3/6 Georgetown University men's soccer team will face UConn in the second BIG EAST semifinal on Thursday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by Invesco QQQ on FloSports with John Fanta and Monika Moore on the call.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is the top seed in the tournament, advancing to the semifinals after defeating Seton Hall on Saturday with an overall record of 12-2-2 and 6-1-1 in BIG EAST regular season play.
  • Georgetown's place in the semifinals was secured with its 2-1 win over Seton Hall in the quarterfinals. Kyle Linhares and Matthew Van Horn scored the two goals for the Hoyas.
  • Van Horn's game winner came in the 86th minute and was his first of his career, allowing the freshman to send his team on to the semifinals.
  • Seven Hoyas earned BIG EAST postseason awards, as announced on Tuesday. Senior captain Kenny Nielsen was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, and was unanimously selected to the first team.
  • Senior Ryan Schewe was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, while classmate Marlon Tabora was named Co-Midfielder of the Year.
  • Joining Nielsen on the First Team All-BIG EAST were Schewe, junior Kieran Sargeant and sophomore Jacob Murrell.
  • Linhares and sophomore Zach Zengue were named to the Third Team All-BIG EAST.
  • Georgetown also won BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Murrell leads the Hoyas with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points on the season. He sits at 16th nationally in goals scored, as well as second nationally and first in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals (6).
  • Murrell also sits at third in the league for goals, goals per game (0.69), points and points per game (1.62).
  • Zengue trails Murrell with five goals and six assists on the year for 16 points, as does Tabora with three goals and eight assists for 14 points.
  • Tabora leads the BIG EAST and sits at 19th nationally in assists per game (0.53). He is second in the league and 21st nationally in assists. Sargeant is behind him with six assists on the season, making him seventh in the league.
  • In goal, Schewe has played a majority of the minutes with 23 saves and a 1.00 goals-against average for the year which makes him third in the league.
  • This marks Georgetown's 29th appearance in the BIG EAST tournament in program history, and seventh consecutive appearance in the semifinals.
About the Huskies
  • UConn is 9-7-1 on the season and finished 4-4 in BIG EAST regular season play, finishing fourth in the East Division with the fifth seed in the BIG EAST Championship.
  • The Huskies secured their place in the semifinals in a 2-1 overtime win over St. John's on Saturday. Eli Conway scored the game-winner in the 102nd minute.
  • Scott Testori leads the Huskies with eight goals and four assists on the season for 20 points. Pierce Bateson is behind him with three goals and four assists for 10 points.
  • Four Huskies earned BIG EAST postseason honors. Kieran Chandler was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Nicolas Tomerius earned All-BIG EAST second team honors, while Testori, Bateson, and Chandler were selected to the third team.
  • Jayden Hibbert has appeared in 13 games for UConn with 36 saves and three shutouts to his credit for a 1.41 goals-against-average.

  • The Hoyas last met the Huskies during the regular season on October 7 at Shaw Field. Georgetown took the 3-1 home victory with a goal from Maximus Jennings and a brace by Tabora.
