Edwin Thompson on Capen
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to step into this new role. This program, our staff, and our players mean so much to me and I am excited to continue building on the success we have earned over the last few years. It's a great day to be a Hoya!" - Associate Head Coach
George Capen
Capen joined the baseball program in March of 2021 as the team's pitching coach. Capen had previously spent three seasons at Holy Cross as a member of the coaching staff where he served as the team's pitching coach. At Holy Cross, Capen helped develop Declan Cronin who made his first MLB appearance last season for the Chicago White Sox after being drafted in the 36th round in 2019.
Capen has been a vital part of the Hoyas' success in the past two seasons as GU has had back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in program history. Capen was instrumental in the development of
Jake Bloss who became the programs highest draft pick in history after being selected 99th overall by the Houston Astros in the 2023 MLB Draft. Bloss also went on to be named an All-American, the first pitcher in program history to earn that honor as well as winning the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year award.
In 2022, Capen was a member of the program's first BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year and helped elevate the Hoya pitchers to new heights highlighted by unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection
Nolan McCarthy, who became just the fourth pitcher in program history to make the conference's top team.
Prior to his coaching career, Capen was a standout reliever for Holy Cross for four seasons, where he finished his career with the most pitching appearances in school history (99). Capen also ranks seventh all-time in career saves (5) and held a career record of 14-5 on the mound notching the most wins by a relief pitcher in program history.
Upon graduating from Holy Cross, Capen signed a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners in 2017. He played with the team's Arizona League Affiliate in Peoria during his first pro season. After spending 2018 Spring Training with the Mariners, Capen returned to Holy Cross to join the coaching staff.
