Georgetown Competes in LeClair Classic

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team will travel to Greenville, North Carolina for a three-game weekend with contests against Long Beach State, Indiana University and No. 9 East Carolina University in the LeClair Classic. Game one is set for Friday with first pitch slated for noon at Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium. GU also earned votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll as announced on Tuesday. This is the first time the Georgetown University baseball program has ever received votes in a national poll.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown currently sits at 6-2 after a productive week that saw the Hoys go 4-1 with back-to-back shutout wins over Iona and UNC Wilmington. After going 4-1 over the weekend, the Blue & Gray received votes in a national poll (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) for the first time in program history.
  • GU pitched 27-consecutive scoreless innings en route to a four-game win streak that began Tuesday with an 18-10 win over the Navy Midshipmen.
  • Ubaldo Lopez leads the Hoyas at the plate with .385 average and a team leading eight walks. Lopez set the new school record in home runs a year ago with 19 and picked up where he left off hitting three in the team's first eight games. Lopez has a slugging percentage of .808 while also having an on base percentage of .543.
  • Austin Kretzschmar, the graduate student, is second on the team in batting average hitting.367 with a team high 11 hits on the season.
  • Michael Eze has been a pivotal part of the Hoyas' hot start registering 10 hits in 30 plate appearances for an average of .333. Eze also leads the team in bases earned from being hit by a pitch.
  • Jake Bloss earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Iona on Sunday. Bloss went seven innings and recorded 10 strikeouts in the process while allowing just two hits and zero runs. Bloss held Iona to a .083 batting average which is a season best for GU.
  • Lopez earned his second-consecutive BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection after a week that saw him go 6-for-15 at the plate while having a .400 average. In five games, Lopez earned eight walks while chipping in one home run, two doubles and five RBIs.
  • Head Coach Edwin Thompson enters his third season on the Hilltop. After a 6-25 season in 2021, Thompson guided the Blue & Gray to 32 wins last season which is the most in program history. Thompson captured his 200th career win in Tuesday's matchup against Navy. 
  • Georgetown is coming off of a 32-24 season in 2022 which set the record for most wins in a season in program history. The Hoyas return 20 players from last season, including now school record holders Lopez and Jake Hyde who each hit 19 home runs a season ago.
 
ABOUT LONG BEACH STATE
  • Long Beach currently sits at 4-3 after picking up wins against Wichita State and Seattle in three-game series. Long Beach did drop a contest to each while also dropping a midweek matchup to Loyola Marymount.
  • Rocco Peppi and Eddie Saldivar lead the team at the plate with a .423 average each. Rocco has two double and one home run while recording nine RBIs and Saldivar has two triples and two RBIs.
  • On the mound, Graham Osman leads the Dirtbags with 11.1 innings pitched. In his 11.1 innings of work, Osman had allowed six hits, four runs, and has struck out 13 batters.
 
ABOUT INDIANA
  • The Hoosiers sit at 4-4 on the season after dropping two games to both Auburn and Texas. IU picked up one win in each three-game series against Auburn and Texas and was able to grab two more victories over Butler and Miami Ohio.
  • Phillip Glasser leads the Hoosiers at the plate with a .375 average with 12 hits in 32 plate appearances. Glasser has two doubles and one triple to go along with five RBIs this season. He has also earned four walks in eight games thus far.
  • On the mound, Luke Sinnard leads IU with a 2-0 record and a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings of work. Sinnard has allowed 10 hits, three runs and recorded 11 strikeouts.
 
ABOUT No. 9 EAST CAROLINA
  • The Pirates sit at 5-2 with a three-game sweep against George Washington and two wins against North Carolina. The Pirates dropped midweek contests to Campbell 6-5 (10) and Duke 9-0.
  • At the plate, Jacob Starling leads all batters for the Pirates with a .400 average with ten hits in 25 plate appearances. Starling has recorded two doubles, one triple and one home run to go along with a team best 11 RBIs.
  • Trey Yesavage has been on the mound for a team high 11 innings so far this season. In those 11 innings, Yesavage has a 1.64 ERA while allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out 15 batters.

The Blue & Gray will be back in action on Tuesday, March 7 as they head to Fairfax, Virginia to take on the George Mason Patriots. GU will then host the Navy Midshipmen on Wednesday, March 8 in their home opener at Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
