Georgetown Falls to VMI

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the VMI Keydets 12-1 on Friday afternoon in a seven-inning contest. With the setback, GU slides to 1-4 on the season while VMI improves to 3-3 on the year. Game two of the series is slated for tomorrow, February 24, with first pitch coming at 3 p.m.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the bottom of the first, VMI hit an RBI single with a runner on second to give the Keydets an early 1-0 lead. VMI tacked on another after a wild pitch making the score 2-0 with two outs. After a walk in the ensuing at bat, VMI hit a two-run blast to left field giving the Keydets a 4-0 lead in the first.  
  • After a scoreless top of the second for GU, VMI was able to put runners on second and third with one out. An RBI single from the Keydets would bring home both runners extending the VMI lead to 6-0.
  • The third frame was scoreless for both sides. In the bottom of the fourth the Keydets tacked on another with a solo home run to left field.
  • The fifth frame was scoreless for both sides. GU was retired in order in the top of the sixth keeping the score at 7-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning. The second batter of the inning hit a solo home run to left field extending the Keydet lead to 8-0. VMI then had runners on first and second with one out when the Keydets hit a home run to right center extending the lead to 11-0. Another solo shot with two outs gave the Keydets a 12-0 advantage heading into the seventh.
  • In the top of the seventh, Carapellotti hit a leadoff double before Braxton Templin entered as a pinch runner. Castillo hit a single moving Templin to third before Andrew Bergeron hit a sac fly to center bringing Templin home for the Hoyas first tally of the day.
  • GU was unable to mount a comeback and the game finished after the top of the seventh frame.
 
OF NOTE
  • Carapellotti recorded his second multi-hit game of the season.
  • VMI hit five home runs in the contest.
