Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No.12 Denver in Close Battle

Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team fell 11-10 in a tight battle to No. 12 Denver on Friday afternoon. The Hoyas are now 3-9 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST action while Denver advances to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.  

ON THE RECORD 
"I thought that the players executed really well for a majority of the game. We ended up falling a little bit short and while that's going to hurt a little bit I think there are a lot of positives we can take away for the rest of conference play." - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the game.

How It Happened
  • After a scoreless opening five minutes, Denver got the scoring started with two goal in under a minute. The Hoyas capitalized on a player-up opportunity to land their first goal of the afternoon at the 7:46 mark. Tessa Brooks netted a goal at the 1:03 mark to tie the contest 2-2. Gracie Driggs scored her 25th goal of the season with nine seconds left in the first to put the Hoyas up 3-2 at the end of the quarter. 
  • The Hoyas continued their scoring streak with two goals from Maley Starr to extend their lead to 5-2. The Pioneers responded at the 8:27 with a goal from Lauren Black. GU continued to widen its lead with two consecutive goals to go up 7-3. Denver netted two goals in the final minutes of the quarter to go into halftime down by two 7-5.  
  • The Hoyas and Pioneers were held scoreless for the first nine minutes of the third quarter. Rileigh Meyer found the back of the net off a pass from Kylie Hazen. At the 4:22 mark, Driggs completed a hat trick to put the Hoyas up 9-5. GU and Denver exchanged a pair of goals before the Pioneers closed out the quarter with a goal with eight seconds remaining. The Hoyas held a three goal lead 10-7 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Pioneers controlled the fourth quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to grab the 11-10 victory. 
Of Note
  • Driggs led the Hoyas with three goals followed by Starr with two goals and one assist. Tatum Geist recorded a team-high of three assists followed by Hazen and Molly Byrne with two each.
  • Geist led the Blue & Gray with four caused turnovers. 
  • In her second career start, Byrne scored her first goal of the season.
  • Lily Athanas and Maggie O'Brien each recorded a team-high of six draw controls apiece. 
  • In net, Leah Warehime recorded eight saves. 
Up Next 
The Hoyas will stay on the Hilltop to take on BIG EAST foe Xavier on Wednesday, April 3. The opening draw is scheduled for noon on Cooper Field.
