WASHINGTON – A pair of Hoyas earned BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
The awards come after a dominant Hoya showing in the 1500m events at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday.
Melissa Riggins was named BIG EAST Women's Track Athlete of the Week after taking top collegiate honors with her new personal-best time of 4:07.96.
Abel Teffra was named BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week after running his new personal-best time of 3:38.25.
ABOUT THE HOYAS
- With her 4:07.96 finish, Melissa Riggins took third place overall in the 1500m at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
- Her time puts her first in the current national collegiate rankings, and it tops her own second-best program finish in the event at the 2023 Bryan Clay Invitational. It is second only to Olympian Emily Infeld's 2012 record of 4:07.77 in Georgetown history.
- Abel Teffra took second in his heat and ninth place overall with his 3:38.25 finish at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
- Teffra's time currently ranks eighth nationally in the event.
- Riggins and Teffra are beginning outdoor season competition after a dominant indoor season, which concluded with both runners earning First Team All-America honors. Riggins was a First Team All-American in the mile with a fourth-place national finish (4:29.02), which set a new school record. Teffra took fifth place nationally with a mark of 4:02.57, recording the best finish by a Hoya in the event at an NCAA meet since 1996.
- This is both athletes' first time earning the honor this outdoor season.
