WASHINGTON – Charlotte Tomkinson kept her postseason run alive in record-book fashion, highlighting Thursday's action for the Georgetown University track & field team at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor East First Round in Lexington, Kentucky.
"Tomkinson managed an incredibly deep opening round, fought through a couple of tough positional challenges, and qualified for the next round. We take nothing for granted at this level. She has some lessons that will serve her well in the Quarterfinal in two days. I'm very proud of the season that Hegberg put together; few athletes I've coached have pulled themselves from so far down from injury and frustration to become the athlete she's made herself into the last six months; it's been an inspiration to the program. I know in seasons to come she'll see today as the start of that next breakthrough, as she put herself in the right spot, just missed a critical moment, but now has the understanding of this next level to which she's now equipped to excel. Riggins has fought so hard the last two years from one challenge to the next. Those efforts brought her to today, where she looked poised and felt highly capable for the first time in a very long time; she had earned every bit of that capacity. Unfortunately, the 'racing gods' had other ideas, as she was clipped from behind and in front in rapid sequence, sending her down hard to the ground. The race officials declared the contact incidental, which was hard to stomach; the staff and program are gutted that an absolutely illustrious career would end in this fashion. We all imagined her blazing to the end with her best level determining the finish and not unfortunate race contact. This is sport, and we'll be disappointed for and with her, but I know she'll come back from this. Her track record of overcoming adversity is 100 percent, so far, and that'll not change because of one moment in a race. She'll be on the Mount Rushmore of Hoya greats." -Assistant Coach
