Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short to UConn on Senior Day

Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team fell 9-8 to UConn on senior day to wrap up the 2024 regular season. The Hoyas finished the season 7-10 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST action while UConn finished 10-6 on the season and advanced to 5-1 in conference play. The Hoyas will claim the third seed in the BIG EAST Championship while the Huskies captured the second seed.

ON THE RECORD
"Disappointing loss but I thought we played hard. We need to be more disciplined with our fouls have four green and yellow cards is too much for us. Our effort was great and we will get another opportunity to face them again next week," - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the loss.

How It Happened
  • Georgetown dominated the game for much of the first quarter, taking an early lead as Gracie Driggs scored the first goal of the game three minutes in. The Hoya defense held strong to bolster this momentum highlighted by a charge taken by Margaret Lonergan and by UConn's six turnovers in the first nine minutes of the game. On the other side, the Huskies did not have a response for Georgetown's offense as Maley Starr scored off a free position and two back-to-back goals from Molly Byrne and Emma Gebhardt put the Hoyas up 4-0 with 9:05 left in the quarter. As the quarter went on, UConn found its footing and scored two goals, ending the period 4-2.
  • UConn continued to disrupt the early momentum that the Hoyas built as their defense worked to stifle them in the second quarter. Despite a free position goal by Kylie Hazen to keep the Hoyas up 5-3, the Huskies kept clawing back and scored two goals to tie the game at 5-5 with five minutes left in the first half. Still, the Hoyas left the quarter on top with a buzzer-beater goal by Hazen off an assist from Tessa Brooks to push the score to 6-5.
  • The third quarter saw little scoring as Georgetown and UConn battled back and forth on possessions. The Hoyas scored off another free position goal from Maley Starr to go up 7-5, but the Huskies responded with a goal at 9:44 to keep it a one-goal game. Neither team could find the back of the net for the rest of the quarter, with the score remaining 7-6 going into the final period.
  • The fourth quarter saw spectacular goalkeeping from both teams as each tried to pull away with the tightly contested game. Despite impressive saves from Leah Warehime, the Huskies scored two unanswered goals to take the lead 8-7 with 5:18 left in the game. Still, the Hoyas were able to respond just a minute later as Hazen found Starr in the center to tie the game. With just under three minutes left, the Huskies converted a free position goal to go ahead. This time, Georgetown could not put together a rebound as the game ended with them just behind, 9-8.
Of Note
  • Starr led the Hoyas with three goals including two free-position goals followed by Hazen with two. Gebhardt and Driggs each tallied one goal.
  • Maggie O'Brien controlled the circle for the Hoyas with four draw controls.
  • Starr and Margaret Lonergan paced the Blue & Gray with five caused turnovers each.
  • In net, Leah Warehime made six saves for a .400 save percentage.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Huskies 24-19.
