Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short to UConn in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals

Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 3 Georgetown women's lacrosse team fell 13-11 to No. 2 UConn in the BIG EAST Semifinals in Cincinnati, Ohio on Thursday evening. The Huskies advance to face Denver in the BIG EAST Championship game at noon on Saturday. 

ON THE RECORD 
"We played with a lot of heart, fighting back today. The result hurts but the journey will be what we will all remember, I am very proud of this team," - said Head Coach Ricky Fried on the loss. 

How It Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board first with a goal from Maley Starr at the 13:28 mark. UConn got on the board a minute later with a free-position goal from Susan Lafountain. The Huskies kept their momentum going to earn their first lead of the content with a goal from Morgan Carter. The Hoyas went on a three-goal scoring run sparked by a free-position goal from Rileigh Meyer to go up 4-2. After a yellow card on Emma Gebhardt at 6:33, Katie Shaffer capitalized on the player-up opportunity and went on a three-goal run to reclaim the lead for UConn 5-4. Eliza Bowman would score one last goal for the Huskies (6-4) to end the first quarter. 
  • The Huskies continued their scoring run in the second quarter with four unanswered goals led by Carter with two. The UConn netminder Landyn White made five saves to hold the Hoyas scoreless in the second. At halftime, the Huskies led 10-4.
  • The Hoyas controlled the third quarter with five goals led by Gebhardt with two and only allowed one goal from the Huskies. GU made it a two-goal game 11-9 by the end of the quarter. 
  • In the fourth quarter, the Hoyas opened up with two goals to tie the game 11-11. The Huskies responded with two goals to gain the 13-11 lead. UConn held off the Hoyas for seven minutes to earn the 13-11 win in the BIG EAST Semifinals.
