Hoyas Head to Prasco Park for BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team will travel to Mason, Ohio to compete in the BIG EAST Baseball Championship presented by JEEP. The event is hosted at Prasco Park which has been home to the BIG EAST Championship for the past five seasons. No. 3 Georgetown will face No. 2 St. John's on Wednesday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the double elimination tournament.

ABOUT THE HOYAS
  • Georgetown (34-18, 13-7 BE) is coming off a series win over St. John's this weekend. The Hoyas secured their first series victory in Queens in the past 24 seasons after taking the first and third games of the series 1-0 and 3-0, respectively.
  • GU set a program record for most wins in a season with 34 breaking the record set in 2022 of 32 wins. The Blue & Gray also set the program record for most conference wins in a season with 13.
  • Senior Christian Ficca was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year on Monday, an award that has only been won by one Hoya before in program history. Nick Collins was the first Hoya to be honored with the award after a remarkable season in 2015. Ficca is the fifth Hoya in program history to win a major conference award. GU has now won a major conference award in three-consecutive seasons with Owen Carapellotti winning Freshman of the year in 2022, Jake Bloss winning Pitcher of the Year in 2023 and Ficca winning Player of the Year in 2024.  
  • Ficca has dominated this season for GU slashing .362/.466/.604 in 52 games. The senior has a team-high 63 RBIs, a mark good for 50th in the nation. Ficca also moved into second most RBIs in a season in program history trailing only Steve Iannini who had 70 in 1985.
  • Everett Catlett was tabbed as a first team All-BIG EAST selection after posting a 6-1 record and a 2.85 ERA across 72.2 innings of action. Catlett struckout 79 batters this season which ranks tied for eighth most in a season in program history.
  • Joe Hollerbach was named to the All-BIG EAST first team after a fantastic first season on the Hilltop. In 51 games this season, Hollerbach posted a .332 batting average to go with .432 on base percentage and .495 slugging percentage.
  • Cody Bowker was selected to the All-BIG EAST second team after a stellar sophomore campaign. Bowker posted a 5-1 record on the season with a 2.61 ERA across 41.1 innings of action. The sophomore was second on the team in strikeouts with 53 and also helped the team post two of its five shutouts.
  • Owen Carapellotti was tabbed as a second team All-BIG EAST selection for the second-consecutive season.
  • GU leads the conference in base on balls (282), batting average (.289), double plays (49), runs (405), scoring (7.6), shutouts (5), slugging percentage (.480), WHIP (1.44), pickoffs (19) and is tied for first in triples (19). Georgetown is currently second in the nation in saves with 21 and tied for second in the nation in pickoffs. GU also had the lowest conference ERA in the country with a 2.76 ERA in BIG EAST action. 
 
ABOUT No. 2 ST. JOHN'S
  • St. John's (34-16-1, 14-7 BE) enters the championships after losing two out of three in the final regular season series against the Blue & Gray. It was the first time in 24 years that the Hoyas have won a road series at St. John's.
  • Mario Pesca, Jimmy Keenan and Garrett Scavelli were named to the All-BIG EAST first team and the St. John's coaching staff won Coaching Staff of the Year.
  • Pesca leads SJU on the mound with a 2.54 ERA and a 6-1 record. Blake Mayberry leads the Red Storm at the plate slashing .345/.450/.446. Mayberry has tallied 58 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, one home run and 33 RBIs. The senior has also chipped in a team-high 31 walks.

ABOUT No. 1 UCONN
  • UConn (32-21, 17-4 BE) is coming off a weekend sweep of Butler as the Huskies secured a 10-9 victory, 12-2 and 11-3.
  • Ian Cooke was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. Brady Afthim, Luke Broadhurst, Cooke and Korey Morton were all selected to the All-BIG EAST first team.
  • Korey Morton leads the Huskies at the plate slashing .324/.370/.533 on the season with 68 hits, 14 doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBIs.
 
ABOUT No. 4 Xavier
  • Xavier (29-25, 12-9 BE) lost its final series of the year to Villanova dropping two out of three games to the Wildcats.
  • Jared Cushing was named to the All-BIG EAST first team after slashing .288/.378/.456. Cushing tallied 62 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 45 RBIs.
  • Jonathan Kelly leads the Musketeers on the mound with a 4.66 ERA and a 2-2 record in 19 appearances this season. Kelly has three saves and has seen 58 innings of action on the mound.
