ON THE RECORD
"What a game. It was such a fun game in the midweek, you never know what you're gonna get. I thought we came out and did a great job offensively to score 14 runs. It was all because of Johan Franco, he gave us a great start with four innings and did a good job mixing up his pitches and has been showing some great growth the past couple of weeks. Penn State is a good team, they were gonna come back, we knew they would, they've been scoring a lot of runs. I'm glad we hit last and got the chance to extend it and I thought our offense was great all day as a unit. I thought Kavi Caster and Blake Schaaf both had a very special day with a lot of hits. Jack Volo was a highlight as well. He went in there with the bases loaded and only gave up one run to get out of there and finished it in the ninth. I'm proud of our group, we know it's going to be a battle tomorrow." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • GU took an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs. The first came from a Sheffield RBI single, followed by Caster crossing the plate on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, Schaaf singled to left field, bringing in Leib and increasing the lead to 3-0. Savoy then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Sheffield to score, pushing the lead to 4-0. The Hoyas continued their offensive surge as Caster hit a single, driving in Schaaf to cap off the scoring.
  • The Hoyas kept the momentum going in the third, adding six more runs. Gilio led off with a deep shot over the right field wall for his second home run in two games, extending the lead to 6-0. Leib then crossed the plate after Brian Depman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Larkins followed with a single up the middle, driving in Sheffield to make it 8-0. Caster proceeded to pick up his second RBI of the day with a single to left center, scoring Schaaf. Gilio wrapped up the scoring run on his second hit of the inning and singled to left center, scoring Larkins and Depman. The inning concluded with the Hoyas leading 11-0.
  • PSU bounced back in the fourth when Joe Jaconski hit a solo shot to make the score 11-1, but the Hoyas grabbed another run in the bottom of the frame when Schaaf stole home. The Hoyas led 12-1.
  • The Nittany Lions scored two runs in the top of the fifth due to a throwing error and a passed ball. Penn State kept the momentum going in the sixth with a home run from Molinaro, cutting the Hoya lead to eight.
