Georgetown Football Defeats Davidson 51-14 in 2025 Season Opener

WASHINGTON – Led by sophomore running back Savion Hart with three touchdowns in the first quarter, the Georgetown football team defeated Davidson 51-14 at Davidson College Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Hoyas have now won nine of their last 10 season openers.  

ON THE RECORD
"Very proud of how we prepared for our opener. We got out to a fast start. It was good to see a number of our players perform at a high level. Offensively, Savion Hart and the offensive line led the way. Both Danny Lauter and Dez Thomas played at a very high level. Cooper Blomstrom, GianCarlo Rufo and Quincy Briggs contributed to a strong effort defensively. It was far from a perfect game. We will enjoy the win and reset tomorrow. We will work learn from our mistakes and improve as we return home to Cooper Field." - Head Coach Rob Sgarlata 

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Five Hoyas recorded at least one touchdown in the win. .
  • Hart recorded a career high of three touchdowns in the first quarter. The sophomore's longest rushing touchdown was for 69 yards, while his longest touchdown catch was for 79 yards. 
  • Hart led the offense with 201 all-purpose yards. 
  • Jimmy Kibble and Nicholas Dunneman each caught one touchdown pass, while Bryce Cox and Jayden Sumpter each recorded one rushing touchdown.
  • Starting quarterback Danny Lauter completed 11-16 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown, while Dez Thomas II completed 6-7 pass attempts for 126 yards and one touchdown.
  • Sophomore kicker Thomas Anderson made his first career field goal for 41 yards. 
  • The Hoyas dominated the ground game with 292 rushing yards.
  • On defense, four Hoyas tallied one sack. 
  • Matthew Plunkett forced one fumble that was recovered by Andres Franquez.
  • Quincy Briggs recorded one interception and returned it for 10 yards.  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hart got the Hoyas on the board early with a 69-yard rushing touchdown on the third play of the contest. Approximately 11 minutes later, Hart ran the ball 27 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter to put GU up 14-0 with 3:30 remaining in the first. The Wildcats responded during the next drive. Brody Reina caught a 55-yard touchdown pass to bring Davidson within seven (14-7). Senior quarterback Thomas II entered the game for the Hoyas' final drive of the quarter. Thomas completed a 73-yard touchdown pass to Hart to put GU up 20-7 at the end of the quarter. 
  • At the 11:45 mark of the second quarter, Lauter completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Kibble for the Hoyas' fourth score of the afternoon. After an 11-yard rush from Thomas at the four-minute mark, Cox completed a three-yard rushing touchdown to widen GU's lead 33-7. The Blue & Gray opted for a two-point conversion to extend its lead to 35-7. Davidson regained control of the ball at the 3:37 mark, but was quickly shut down by an interception from Briggs during the first play of the drive. Anderson kicked a 41-yard field goal to put the Hoyas up 38-7. The Wildcats closed out the first half with a 12-yard rushing touchdown with 14 seconds remaining in the quarter. At halftime, GU held a 38-14 lead.  
  • The Hoyas scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter. Dunneman caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Lauuter to put GU up 45-15 in the third quarter.
  • Four seconds into the fourth quarter, Jayden Sumpter rushed for four yards to score his first career touchdown.
UP NEXT
  • The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop to take on Wagner in GU's home opener on Cooper Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. on September 6.
