WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 8) -- UMBC scored six runs in the second inning, and cruised to a 10-0 win over the Georgetown on Wednesday, March 8, in baseball action at the GU Baseball Stadium. The victory, the second for the Retrievers (2-6) this season, coincided with the Hoyas (9-10) first shut out loss of the season.
Two errors in the second led to three unearned runs for UMBC. Center fielder Peter Tschiffley singled in another score and first baseman Greg Deboy clocked one over the left field fence for two more to give the Retrievers an early 6-0 cushion. Catcher Scott Kosmicky doubled in the fifth to post three RBI and pushed the lead the 9-0. Shortstop Jared Boyd homered in the ninth for the 10-0 final.
UMBC's Ray Hall pitched a complete game, four hit shutout while striking out eight batters. Pitcher Matt Arizin (Jr., Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) went seven innings allowing 10 hits and no earned runs, but recorded the loss. Kosmicky led the Retrievers going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Center fielder Jim Vankoski (Jr., Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) paced the Hoyas with a 1-for-2 effort and one walk.
Georgetown plays Howard on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium.
