Men's Lacrosse Defeats Butler, 21-8

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown opened a 7-2 lead in the first quarter and held off the Butler Bulldogs the remainder of the game, winning 21-8. Hoya seniors Scott Doyle (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Tom Tamberrino (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall College) each netted three goals in the contest as did Butler's Ryan Ward. For Doyle it was his fourth hat trick of the season. The fourth-ranked Hoyas remained perfect on the season at 4-0 and 1-0 in the ECAC Conference while Butler dropped to 2-2 overall. It was the 13th-straight home win for the Hoyas, who have not lost in Washington, D.C. since March 27, 1999.

Georgetown opened up the game by scoring the first four goals, starting with Doyle's first at the 13:39 mark. Mike Hammer (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) assisted on the next three goals as Tamberrino put in two and freshman Neal Goldman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) also found the back of the net. Butler responded with two scores after the initial Hoya flurry, with Greg Ruccia scoring for the Bulldogs at 9:11 and Doug Patterson scoring with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter. The Hoyas rebounded by scoring three more times before the period ended.

In the second period GU extended the lead with back to back goals from Keith Baker (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) and Doyle. Georgetown and Butler traded goals the remainder of the period and at the half GU was ahead 11-4.

The second half saw Butler's Matt Keyes score the first goal of the period and cut Georgetown's lead to 11-5. But for the remainder of the game every time Butler scored one goal GU responded with three. First year Hoyas Walid Hajj (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), Ken Osier (Fayetteville, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) and Kevin Shooshan (Potomac, Md./Landon) all scored their career first goals over the course of the third and fourth quarters.

GU on the day took 64 shots compared to Butler's 24. The Hoyas were stellar on face-offs, winning 25 of 32. In groundballs GU grabbed 45 to the Bulldog's 17.

Starting in goal for GU was Dan Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) and he recorded six saves and allowed seven goals. In goal for the Bulldog's was Brendan Winkler who stopped 17 shots and allowed 17 goals.

Georgetown takes to the road on March 17, when the Hoyas face UMBC at 1 p.m.
