GU Drops Doubleheader to GW

Georgetown’s baseball team dropped two games in a doubleheader yesterday, March 27, to the Colonials of George Washington University. The Hoyas lost the first game by a score of 9-6 and lost the second 10-2.

In the first match-up, Georgetown jumped to an early 4-2 lead. In the first inning, Eric Santana (Sr., Santurce, P.R./Edgwood) drove home sophomore Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) from third base on a single. The next batter, sophomore Robert O’Hare (San Jose, Calif./Mission College), brought Green home from third on a grounded out to the pitcher. In the second inning, rightfielder Marc Carlini (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) scored on a Ron Cano (Fr., El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) single to make the score 3-2. Boice double to right center scoring Carlini and increasing the Hoya lead to 4-2. The Hoyas scored their final two runs in the ninth inning. Senior Jim Vankoski (Aston, Pa./Strath Haven) singled to bring home Boice, who had advanced to third off a Mike Green (Jr., McLean, Va./Landon School) single and a Colonial error. Green scored on the next at bat when Eric Santana singled to right. Starting pitcher Patrick Salvitti (So., North Whales, Pa./La Salle) suffered the loss allowing five runs (3 ER) on four hits in 4.1 innings.

In the second game, Georgetown got on the board in the second inning when shortstop Ron Cano homered to left field. It was Cano’s first home run of the year and his 12th RBI. Cano also scored in the ninth inning to notch the Hoyas’ final run. He reached base on a single, then advanced to second on an error by George Washington’s leftfielder. Senior Jay Catalano (Hunting Valley, Ohio/Univ. School) then singled to the shortstop, advancing Cano to third. With the bases loaded, second baseman Mike Green walked, pushing Cano home. Starting pitcher Jim Vankoski allowed eight runs (4 ER) on eight hits in four innings picking up the loss. Freshman Tim Nunziata (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) gave up two runs and struck out two pitching the final three innings.

The Hoyas will take the field again versus Coppin State on Thursday, March 29, at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
