Georgetown’s Baseball team won their third consecutive game posting a 16-0 shutout over Coppin State at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. on Friday, March 9. The contest ended after the top of the seventh when the 10-run rule took affect. The win raised GU to 3-7 on the season and 2-1 at home.
The Hoyas followed a complete game seven strike-out performance by freshman Kevin Field (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) on Thursday with another strong defensive showing throwing seven shutout innings with six strike-outs. Georgetown pitchers junior Eric Sutton (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) and junior Tony Pina (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) combined to face 23 batters over the seven innings allowing three hits and two walks. Sutton, in his third start this season, earned his first win pitching five innings striking out four while giving up two hits and two walks. Pina closed the game pitching the final two innings striking out two of the six batters he faced. He has not allowed an earned run in his four appearances this season.
GU’s offense knocked in a season-high 16 runs batting 14-33 with two doubles and a triple. Every starter collected at least one hit as the Hoyas had 11 different batters reach base. Freshman Carlos Gazitua (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) led the team with three RBIs. Sophomore Jason Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), sophomore Matt Carullo (Oakton, Va./Paul VI), junior Phil Pierorazio (Scarsdale N.Y./Eastchester), senior Brian Cassese (Scarsdale, N.Y./Eastchester), and sophomore Tony Lee (Bromall Pa./Malvern Prep) all collected two RBI’s. Junior Mike Green (McLean, Va./Landon School) and sophomore Robert O’Hare (San Jose, Calif./Mission College) also each knocked in a run.
The Hoyas face Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, March 10 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md. for a double header beginning at noon.
