Washington, DC ? Georgetown?s baseball team picked up their fourth win over their last six games with a 7-3 victory against Lafayette College in Game One of a double-header. The win was led by designated hitter Mike Green (Sr., McLean, Va./Landon School) who batted 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. The Hoyas dropped the second game of the double-header 8-2 bringing their overall record to 4-9 on the season.
GU compiled seven runs on 13 hits in the opener with all starters either driving in a run or scoring a run. Freshman outfielder Bill Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./Alta Loma) and Green finished with three hits apiece while sophomore Carlos Gazitua (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) tallied two hits. The clutch hit of the game though came from first baseman Brett McLeod (So., St. Albert, Alberta/Paul Kane) with one out in the third in a 2-2 ballgame. Gazitua, Quinn, and Matt Carullo (Jr., Oakton, Va./Paul VI) all singled to load the bases for McLeod. On a 3-2 count McLeod drove the ball to deep right center for a triple giving the Hoyas a 5-2 lead, one they would not relinquish. GU padded their lead by two the next inning when Green led off with a double, Ron Cano (So., El Segundo, Calif./El Segundo) followed with a triple, and Gazitua hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Starting pitcher Eric Sutton (Sr., Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) scattered 11 hits over five and a third innings holding the Leopards to three runs while striking out five in way to earning his second victory of the season. Freshman relief pitcher Patrick Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) allowed two hits, struck out one, and did not give up a walk over the final 1.2 innings.
The Hoyas fell behind early in the second game and were unable to take advantage of eight hits as Lafayette starter Joe Saporetti struck out four on his way to a complete game. Georgetown?s starter Thomas Braun (Fr., Houston, Texas/Kingwood) suffered the loss (0-2) lasting 2.1 innings allowing four runs (2 ER) on six hits. Trailing 4-0, the Hoyas were able to rally for two runs in the third but couldn?t capitalize the remainder of the game leaving a total of seven runners on base. Green went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI while third baseman Tony Lee (Bromall, Pa./Malvern Prep) collected the other RBI. Carullo, who boasts a team leading .415 batting average, added two hits for the Hoyas.
Georgetown is 4-2 over their last six and 4-9 on the season. GU heads west for the next week for games against UC Berkeley (Mar. 5), Cal Poly SLO (Mar. 7), Bethany College (Mar. 8), and St. Mary?s (Mar. 9-10). The Hoyas next home games open their BIG EAST Conference play as Seton Hall comes to town for a three-game set on March 16th and 17th.
