Bethesda, MD - The Georgetown University baseball team tallied 13 hits en route to an 18-6 win over Howard University - their first victory since a 6-3 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers on March 23, 2002. The 18 runs bettered the Hoyas previous season high of 16 in the fourth game of the season against Wofford. Georgetown's improved its home record to 7-14 and now stand at 8-35 overall.
Starting pitcher Kevin Galvin tossed five innings allowing six runs on seven hits and struck out three in earning the victory while improving to 1-2 on the season. Tom O'Connor, Paul Perillo, Travis Danysh, and PJ Martinez all came in for relief with each hurling one inning of scoreless baseball. Danysh and Martinez each had a strikeout.
Third baseman Bill Quinn and designated hitter Brett McLeod paced the Hoyas offense with three hits apiece. Quinn also tallied three RBIs and four runs scored while McLeod collected two RBIs and crossed the plate three times. Four other batters also collected hits for the Hoyas including two for both Ron Cano (RBI, 2 R) and Matt Carullo (3 RBI, R). Shortstop Matt Johnson batted 1-for-4 with a triple and added three RBIs raising his season total to 14. Centerfielder Carlos Gazitua, catcher James Supple, and second baseman Mike Green each scored twice in the game.
The Hoyas actually trailed early on in this game as the Bison collected two runs on two hits in the top of the first to take a 2-0 advantage. Georgetown rallied for three runs in the second with the key hit being a two RBI double by right fielder Robert O'Hare. Howard University bounced back and matched the Hoyas with three runs of their own in the top of the third to regain the lead at 5-3. GU then added four runs in the bottom of the inning, five more in both the fourth and sixth innings, and then one more for added insurance in the eight finishing the game with a season-high 18 runs.
The Hoyas next battle is against BIG EAST conference foe Virginia Tech, a three-game set beginning with a double-header this Saturday at noon and the finale on Sunday at noon. All three games are home at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, MD.
