Bethesda, MD - Georgetown could not avoid a two-game season sweep by the Maryland Terrapins Tuesday night losing 12-2 at Shirley Povich Field under the lights. The loss drops the Hoyas to 9-43 while the Terps improved to 28-19.
The Hoyas pitching staff was unable to find any type of rhythm as they utilized five pitchers with none lasting more than 2 2/3 innings. Starter Tyler Abbott (0-5) suffered the loss allowing five runs (4 ER) on four hits while striking out one and walking three. The relievers didn?t fare much better allowing seven runs (6 ER) on nine hits over the final 6 1/3 innings.
The Terps opened up an early lead in the second taking advantage of three hits, a walk, and an error to score four runs. MD increased the lead to five in the following inning picking up an unearned run on a fielding error by third baseman Bill Quinn. In the bottom of the third the Hoyas managed to pick up a run and trim the deficit to 5-1. Catcher Phil Pierorazio opened the inning with a leadoff walk and advanced to third on shortstop Matt Johnson?s double down the left field line. Pierorazio then scored on centerfielder Carlos Gazitua?s RBI groundout.
Maryland added two runs in the top of the fourth on three hits and looked to add more but pitcher Tom O?Connor was able to get the Terps Kevin McDonald to hit into an inning-ending double play. Georgetown looked to build on that momentum loading the bases on a Robert O?Hare walked sandwiched between singles by Quinn and Ron Cano with none out in the bottom of the fourth. That momentum was crushed though when the Terps were able to get a 1-2-3 double play getting the out at home and first and then struck out the final batter of the inning to end any type of GU rally.
MD continued to increase their lead with individual runs in both the fifth and sixth before the Hoyas added their second run the bottom of the sixth. Quinn led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cano came to the plate and belted his 20th double of the season picking up the RBI as Quinn crossed the plate. Maryland added one more run in the seventh and two more in the ninth to secure the game and the 12-2 victory.
Notes: The Hoyas pitching staff handed out 10 free passes (nine walks, one hit by pitch), five of who scored. Georgetown left nine runners on base while the Terps stranded 11. Ron Cano batted 3-for-4 with a double and boasts a .311 season average. Freshman Bill Quinn went 1-for-3 with a run scored and leads the team with a .341 batting average this season. Catcher Michael Lombardi returned from an ankle sprain to bat in the eighth inning.
Georgetown returns to action on Wednesday to battle the Howard Bison for their final home game this season at Shirley Povich Field, Bethesda, MD. GU defeated the Bison 18-6 earlier this season with pitcher Kevin Galvin (2-2) getting the decision. Wednesday?s match up is set for 7:00 pm EST.
