SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. ? The Seton Hall women's soccer team survived a comeback by the Georgetown Hoyas to earn an important BIG EAST win, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates spotted themselves a 2-0 lead, but needed an overtime goal from freshman Rita Massot to improve their record to 5-10-1 and 2-3 in the BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division. The Hoyas fall to 6-10-1 overall and 0-5 in the BIG EAST Mid-Atlantic Division.
Seton Hall came out aggressively in overtime, and Massot notched the game-winner at 95:15. The goal was set up by junior Carley Piagentini, who controlled the ball just outside the box and fed Massot a pass to the six-yard box, where the freshman slipped it past the keeper for her third game-winning goal of the year.
Senior Nadine Ruddock got the Pirates on the board in a hurry with a goal from nine yards out at 3:25. The score was set up by some nice touch passing in the box from senior Beth Garwood and freshman Aubrey Ellzey. Seton Hall stretched the lead to 2-0, just 1:45 into the second half when Piagentini took a pass from Ellzey and lobbed a shot over the goalkeeper.
The Hoyas got their first goal from Jessie Beers-Altman (State College, Pa./ State College Area) when she took a long pass from Elizabeth Roberti (Rockville Centre, N.Y./ South Side) and put a shot on Seton Hall goalkeeper Buffy Wojciehowski. Wojciehowski stopped the initial shot, but it slipped through her hands and Beers-Altman picked up the loose ball. Kyle Holsinger-Johnson (Rockland, Del./ Wilmington Friends) tied the game for GU at 64:35 when she bent a corner kick just inside the far corner of the net. The Hoyas controlled the ball much of the second half and finished with a 13-7 shot advantage to force overtime.
Wojciehowski made five saves on the day, including four in the second half to anchor the Pirates' defense. Erin Mazursky (Atlanta, Ga./ Pace Academy) made fives saves as well for the Hoyas.
Georgetown returns to action on Sunday, when they are set to play Rutgers at 1:00.
