Washington, DC ? A goal by senior Captain Leanne Rizzo (Walpole, MA/Walpole) in double overtime ended a strong defensive game at Kehoe field against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers at a score of 2-1. The win is Georgetown?s second in a row and puts their record at 3-7, while the Scarlet Knights fall to 6-6.
Strong defensive play dominated the first half, with the Hoyas recording only one shot and holding the Scarlet Knights to seven. The game opened up when Rutger?s Jennifer Noon scored off a corner in the 18th minute of the second half. The Hoyas would come back to tie the game ten minutes later with a goal by senior Captain Lauren Galbally (Malvern, PA/Villa Maria Academy) on a penalty shot. This is Galbally?s fifth goal of the season.
Continual strong defense between the two teams kept the game tied at the end of regulation, and forced the game into overtime. The first overtime period was marked by much transition play and defensive dominance, with Rutgers being held to three shots and Georgetown to zero.
The second overtime period would not be reminiscent of the first, with Rutgers exploding with seven shots, only to be held off by the Hoya defense and freshman Goalie Abby Winer (Rising Sun, MD/Rising Sun). Winer would have four saves in the second overtime period, matching her count for the rest of the game. The game would remain tied until Rizzo would score off her own rebound on a break away, giving the Hoyas a 2-1 victory.
The Hoyas next game is scheduled for Oct. 5, at home, against West Chester.
