Georgetown Women's Soccer Names 2002 Award Winners

February 14, 2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown's women's soccer team announced 2002 award winners at a banquet held earlier this month.

Jessie Beers-Altman (State College, Pa./State College) and Alexis George (Woodbury, N.J./Haddonfield) were named Most Valuable Player for the offense and defense.  Beers-Altman led the team in scoring with 26 points, including 10 goals (3 game winners), setting a new single season record for goals and points.  George posted seven shutouts in 18 games - a new single season record - en route to the Hoyas' second 11 win season in a row.

Most Improved Player honors went to defender Lauren Calone (Branchburg, N.J./Gill St. Bernard) who notched three assists in 2002 while helping patrol a stingy Hoya backline.  Calone started 15 games this season.

The Sarah Breech Inspiration Award went to graduating senior captain Liza Yannuzzi (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) who was a powerful force for the Hoya defense over the past three seasons.  Yannuzzi preservered through injury and ailments to start 53 of 55 games in her career.

Head Coach Diane Drake also announced that the team received the NSCAA Academic All-America Team Award and earned an NSCAA Bronze Sportsmanship Award for fair play during the 2002 season.
