Box Score
ARLINGTON, Va. ? Despite jumping out to an early five-run lead, the Georgetown baseball team couldn?t hold off a late offensive charge by the George Washington Colonials, and ultimately fell, 7-6, on a cold and rainy Tuesday night in Arlington, Va.
The win for GW came in the Colonials? home opener at Barcroft Park. The two teams battled for nine innings with the Colonials winning on an RBI single to centerfield from senior Jeff Fertitta with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
George Washington (1-3) generated run support for their pitchers on 11 hits compared to Georgetown's (1-5) six runs on nine hits. Undermining George Washington?s offensive outbreak, however, were four Colonial errors as a result of a rain-soaked infield and poor visibility from a steady rain. Three of the Hoyas? six runs were unearned. The Georgetown defense fared better in spite of the conditions and recorded an error-free game.
George Washington?s Dan Pfau took his perfect (6-0) career record into battle and was rattled for five hits in four innings, although only two of his five runs were earned. Pfau had two strikeouts and two walks before Nick Koken came in for relief and earned his first win of the year after shutting down the Hoyas by allowing only one run off of four hits in four innings of work. Avi Rasowsky earned the save after working a scoreless ninth despite giving up two walks.
Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) reached base four times (3-for-4 at the plate, 1 BB) and scored twice to lead the Georgetown offense. Ron Cano (El Segundo, Calif./ El Segundo) also had a multiple-hit day (2-for-4, 1 RBI) for the Hoyas.
Georgetown starting pitcher Travis Danysh (San Antonio, Texas/ Alamo Heights) had a solid outing, striking out seven and surrendering just two runs in five innings of work en route to earning a no-decision. Reliever Trey Martin (Pacific Palisades, Calif./ Loyola) was charged with the loss for the Hoyas.
Georgetown is scheduled to have their season opener on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Shirley Povich Field. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
