CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. ? The Georgetown baseball team won its 24th game of the season, the most for the program in 19 years, as the Hoyas defeated Boston College, 11-6, on Sunday afternoon in Chestnut Hill.
The Hoyas (24-29) surpassed the 1986 team's season win total of 23, and earned the program's most victories since Georgetown's inaugural season in the BIG EAST in 1985, when the team went 27-25. The Hoyas' win on Sunday also marks the most conference victories (7) since 2001, when the team went 7-19 in BIG EAST play and 17-39 overall.
Sunday's win began in much the same fashion as the Hoyas' two losing efforts in yesterday's doubleheader, but this time the difference proved to be that after Georgetown jumped out to an early lead, they continued to pour on the offense, and the pitching, led by starter Warren Sizemore (Hamilton, Ohio/ Ross), worked brilliantly to hold the Eagles at bay.
Sizemore worked eight complete innings, allowing two runs on six hits, to earn his fifth win of the season. Sizmore's effectiveness, combined with a great hitting performance by the Hoyas, ended up giving Georgetown an 11-2 cushion heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Andrew Cleary (Weston, Mass./ Belmont Hill) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Parker Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev./ Bishop Gorman), Billy Quinn (Alta Loma, Calif./ Alta Loma), Jim Supple (Summit, N.J./ St. Peter?s Prep) and Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./ Newport) each contributed two hits apiece.
For their part, Boston College's pitching was stronger than the score indicted, as the Eagles defense stumbled with two fielding errors and two throwing errors in the first four innings. Four Georgetown runs were unearned.
Senior Eric Wright led Boston College at the plate with three hits, including one home run, and three runs batted-in.
As they had in yesterday's games, the Hoyas scored first with a four-run, four-hit outburst in the second inning that was aided by two Eagle miscues. The Hoyas ran off to a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning before tacking on four more runs in the top of the seventh off Eagle reliever Jake Marsello.
Down 11-2, Josh DiScipio triggered a one-out Eagle rally in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Thomas Braun (Kingwood, Texas/ Kingwood) with his single to the shortstop, followed by Dave Preziosi's single through the left side. Each runner moved up on a wild pitch, and DiScipio scored on Marco Albano's groundout to the pitcher while Preziosi crossed the plate on Eric Wright's third hit of the game, a single to right field. Junior Drew Locke then sent a two-run, home run to left field before Ryan Leahy struck out looking to end the game.
Senior Matt O'Donnell took the loss for Boston College. He fell to 3-4 on the season, as he allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts.
Quinn ended the week 8-for-21, and raised his batting average to a team-leading 3.50. He had three runs scored and nine runs batted-in as the Hoyas went 2-3 on the week. His two doubles in the Boston College series moved him into a tie for third on the team with 11 on the year.
The Hoyas have the next two weeks off before they return to action and end their season with a three-game set against Villanova starting on May 15.
