Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team (11-4-1, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) lost to Pittsburgh, 2-1 today on North Kehoe Field. Senior forward Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Hoyas.
Although the Hoyas created a mountain of opportunities with 29 shots to Pittsburgh's nine, and eight corner kicks to the Panthers' three, Georgetown was unable to capitalize on their chances.
Georgetown controlled ball possession for most of the first half as the Pittsburgh (3-8-3, 2-4-2 BE) defense gave them room to move the ball. At 13:40 senior McNeill scored on a breakaway as she maneuvered her way through four Pitt defenders, tipping the ball just past the goalie for a Hoya 1-0 lead. This was McNeill's fifth goal of the year. The Hoyas would take this lead into halftime.
The GU offense kept pushing forward as the second half started, taking 13 shots. Then Pittsburgh's Jennifer Kritch scored the equalizing goal from inside the six yard box off a feed from Kristina Francois. Less than seven minutes later, at 78:27, Francois scored the game-winning goal for the Panthers as she snuck it just past GU goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y.) from Lisa Schulte's pass, giving the Pittsburgh the win.
Pitt goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi recorded 14 saves on the day to stop the Hoya offense.
Georgetown celebrates Senior Day this Sunday when they host BIG EAST opponent West Virginia at 1 p.m. on North Kehoe Field.
