Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team (11-7-1, 4-6-1 BIG EAST) lost to Notre Dame today; 6-1, on Alumni Field in South Bend, Ind. to end the regular season. Despite the loss, the Hoyas clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship.
The Hoyas were outshot by the Fighting Irish today, 26-3. Notre Dame broke open the game after halftime, scoring five of its six goals in the second half.
Notre Dame (16-2-0, 10-1-0 BE) took 14 shots, while holding GU to none. At 27:10, Kerri Hanks found the back of the net as her direct kick curved into the upper left corner past GU goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y.). The Irish led 1-0 going into halftime.
Shortly into the second half, ND's Amanda Cinalli scored the second goal for the Irish off an assist from Hanks and Jill Krivacek. At 62:03, senior midfielder Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif.) cut ND's lead to one when sophomore midfielder Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind.) passed the ball and Hardy's shot slipped through the fingers of goalkeeper Lauren Karas. This was Hardy's fifth goal on the year and Jordan's seventh assist.
Shortly after, Notre Dame pulled away, scoring three goals in one minute. The first goal, at 65:55, was scored by Brittany Bock when she took a diving header off Candace Chapman's feed from the right. Then, Katie Thorlakson took a pass from Hanks, dribbled and shot it past Higgins to the right side of the net. At 66:46 Annie Schefter took a left-footed volley from the right side off a Thorlakson feed extending the lead to 5-1. At 86:11, ND's Rebecca Mendoza put the game away with the sixth goal for the Irish, a shot from the top of the box over Higgins. The assist went to Molly Iarocci.
This game ended the regular season for the Hoyas. With a fifth place finish in the BIG EAST B Division, Georgetown clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas will compete against Syracuse, fourth in the BIG EAST A Division at a location, date and time to be determined. Georgetown lost at Syracuse, 1-0, in a double overtime matchup during regular season play.
