Villanova, Penn. - The Georgetown University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-26, 18-30, 25-30, 25-30) decision at Villanova today in BIG EAST action. The Hoyas, who have lost three straight, now stand at 5-12 on the season, 1-4 in league play.
Georgetown had two players post double-doubles. Senior Rachel Nelson (Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis) nailed 11 kills to go along with 24 digs, while sophomore Katie Nulty (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca) posted ten kills and ten digs.
Senior Jenny Weed (Salt lake City, Utah/Utah Valley State College) and freshman Katherine Niesen (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) both complied eight block assists.
Hoya junior Rachel Barton (Marietta, Ga./The Walker School) had a match-high 26 digs.
Georgetown won a tight first game, 30-26. The Hoyas broke an 18-18 tie and upped their advantage to 26-22 before pulling away.
Villanova took a commanding 10-2 edge in game two and never looked back. The closest GU would get was 17-15 before the Wildcats won seven straight points.
The third game was also close as Georgetown trailed, 22-21, 26-22 and 29-24 before the Hoyas were outlasted 30-25.
In the fourth and final game, Georgetown took a 3-0 lead but Villanova took a 22-19 advantage and that would be as close as GU would get until 28-25.
Georgetown is in action again on Sunday, when the Hoyas travel to Rutgers University for a 2:00 p.m. BIG EAST match.
