Hoyas Split Double-header with St. Peter's in Baseball

Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (11-7) split a double header against St. Peter's on Saturday, March 19 at Shirley Povich field. Georgetown defeated St. Peter's 11-4 in the first game, yet fell 4-3 in the second. Senior captain Billy Quinn led the Hoyas with two homeruns.

In the first game, the Hoyas got on the board early and never looked back. In the bottom of the second, Timmy Jones scored off a single by Joe Graziano to put the Hoyas ahead 1-0. Georgetown then went on to score three runs in the fourth. Senior Jim Supple added a run when Brooks was walked to force Supple home. Matt Johnson then drove catcher Brandon Davis home to add one more run. Two plays later, Ryan Craft tallied an RBI off a sacrifice fly to bring Graziano across the plate to make the score 4-0.

The Hoyas added two more runs in the fifth when Davis singled to right center to bring Jones across the plate. Graziano kept momentum, as he hit a sacrifice fly to drive Supple in and make the score 6-0.

In the sixth, senior captain Billy Quinn homered to make the score 7-0. Jones then singled to right field to bring in Craft. Supple then hit a double, driving in Jones and Cleary. Matthew Maranges then singled and drove in Supple to bring the totals to 11-0.

St. Peter's looked to come back in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs. Chris Innis singled to drive in Frank Salvano. David Lewandoski then singled to center to bring in Santo Maertz. Sean Long added a single and brought in Lewandoski and Dennis Alexander. The score would remain the final, 11-4.

In the second game, Georgetown again scored early, but were unable to hold the lead. Cleary scored off a hit by Graziano to go up 1-0. St. Peter's tied it up in the fourth, with Maertz driving in Chris Hernandez.

St. Peter's was the next to score, as they tallied one run in the top of the fifth, with Dennis Alexander scoring off a wild pitch. The Hoyas struck back in the bottom of the fifth, tallying two runs to go ahead 3-2. Quinn rocked his second homer of the day, driving in Matthew Johnson.

St. Peter's scored two runs in the eighth, with Maertz blasting a home run, and Scordato scoring on a hit by Lewandoski. The Hoyas were unable to score in the eighth or the ninth, and St. Peter's claimed victory, 4-3.

The Hoyas and the Peacocks will face again on Sunday, March 20 at Shirley Povich field for the final game of the three game series. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
