SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University baseball team (19-19, 4-9 BE) lost 13-3 to Seton Hall on Sunday, April 17 at Owen T. Carroll field. Seton Hall claimed the edge in the series, 2-1.
SHU jumped out to a quick lead in the first when junior Patrick Sullivan reached on an error and scored one batter later when freshman Mark Pappas sent a home run over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead. The Pirates added another run in the second after senior Anthony Seratelli drew a walk and stole second. He scored on freshman Matt Skopak's double to make it 3-0.
Pitcher Jake Haggerty cruised through the first five innings, allowing just three hits while recording five strike outs and no walks. The Pirates increased their lead in the fourth when Seratelli knocked in a run with a single and Skopak hit a two-run double to make it 6-0.
The Pirates hit a home run in three straight innings, starting with John Walsh sending his first home run of the day in the fifth over the left field fence. The Pirates poured on three more in the sixth when Pappas singled in Sullivan and then scored on a two-run home run by freshman Dan McDonald. Walsh followed in the seventh, sending the first pitch to left field, making it 10-1.
The Hoyas finally cracked Haggerty in the sixth, when Billy Quinn singled home Timmy Jones. GU added two in the eighth after loading the bases on Haggerty with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Derek deGrijs and Mark McLaughlin came home on a pair of wild pitches by SHU's Marc Nigro, making it 11-3. SHU came back in the bottom of the eighth scoring a pair of unearned runs for the final tally of 13-3.
Haggerty improved to 3-5 after throwing 7.1 innings and striking out seven with just six hits and three walks. Michael Halloran took the loss for GU, giving up six runs (four earned) in just three innings of work.
Jones was the only player with more than one hit for GU, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.SHU's Pappas had a strong day going 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Skopak drove in three runs and collected two hits, while Sullivan scored three times.
Georgetown returns to action with a 2:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, Apr. 20, where they host Coppin State.
