Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team dropped two games on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon April 9 to St. John's University at Shirley Povich Field. The Red Storm defeated Georgetown 13-2 in the first game and 5-2 in the second of the doubleheader. Andrew Cleary led the Hoyas in the first game, going two for two with one homerun, while Billy Quinn went two for four in the second, nailing a double and a homerun.
In the first game, Georgetown scored first, but that would be the Hoyas only runs of the game. In the bottom of the second, Andrew Cleary blasted a homerun, and brought in Ryan Craft who had started the inning off with a single. The Red Storm tied it up in the top of the third, with Ken Devenney scoring on a bunt by Jim Martin. Greg Thomson added another run to tie up the ball game, bringing in Sam DeLuca on a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-2.
The Red Storm continued the scoring from then on, scoring three runs in the fourth. Chris Joachim blasted a homerun for the go-ahead run. DeLuca singled two plays later to drive in Will Vogl who had doubled after the Joachim homer. Martin hit a double one play later, and Devenney crossed the plate to make the score 5-2. In the fifth, St. John's scored four more runs to make the lead 9-2. Vogl blasted a triple down the right field line, bringing in Joe Burke and Blake Hershelman, and then scored in the same play on a throwing error. Martin doubled three plays later, and brought in Devenney. St. John's added four more runs in the seventh to make the final 13-2. Eddie Schultz blasted the second Red Storm home run of the day, bringing in Vogl and Anthony Smith. Hershelman notched the final RBI of the day, scoring DeLuca on a sacrifice fly.
Anthony Varvaro earned the win for St. John's, while Billy Quinn was credited with the loss.
In game two of the double header, the Hoyas again got off to an early lead with a homer by Quinn in the fourth but were unable to hold onto the lead. St. John's tied it up in the sixth, with Joachim scoring an unearned run. Georgetown answered back in their half of the sixth, with Mark McLaughlin scoring on a double by Quinn, and just barely beat the throw to the plate to go up 2-1. In the seventh, St. John's scored a run by a homerun off of DeLuca to tied it up 2-2.
St. John's went for the go-ahead run in the eighth, where Hershelman scored off a sacrifice fly by Vogl to make the score 3-2. The Red Storm added two more runs in the ninth, where DeLuca scored an unearned run, and Burke brought in Martin off a single to center to make the final 5-2.
Muir earned the win for St. John's and Craig Hansen tallied his fifth save of the year. Michael Gaggioli was credited with the loss for the Hoyas.
Georgetown and St. John's will face each other again Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m. at Shirley Povich field for the final game of the series.
