WASHINGTON, DC -- The Georgetown University sixth-seeded men's lacrosse team (10-4) advanced to the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship with a 16-6 win over the Black Knights of Army (11-6). The Hoyas will move on to face the Maryland Terrapins next Sunday, May 22, in Princeton, New Jersey while Army's season ends after making the Tournament for the third straight year.

The Hoyas took the advantage early in the game and never let go. Trevor Casey (So., Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep) scored Georgetown's first goal with 9:16 left in the first, and the Hoyas went on to score the first five goals of the game, including four in the first period. Army fought back into the game when Erik Nerdalen, who had only scored one goal on the season, scored Army's first two goals and spearheaded a strong second quarter for the Black Knights in which they closed the gap to 6-3 at halftime.

"We tell our guys any number of times during the year, if it was easy anybody could do it. We beat a good Army team and we are looking forward to the next round."
Georgetown Head Coach Dave Urick

The Hoyas came out on fire in the second half, and within nine minutes the Hoyas had scored five more goals and extended the lead to 11-3. The Hoyas slowed the game down from that point and no one scored until past the eight-minute mark in the forth quarter. Army broke the stalemate with a goal by Justin Bokmeyer, but the Hoyas responded with five more goals in a four-minute period. Army then scored twice before the final buzzer, ending the game at 16-6.

Although the Hoyas shot solidly all day, it was their dominance in the midfield that allowed them to control the game. The Hoyas won 20 of the game's 26 face-offs, including 15 of 16 when Andy Corno (Sr., Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) handled the duties. The Hoyas also caused Army to succeed on only 15 of 25 clear attempts, while Georgetown converted 14 of 15. The Hoyas were all over the groundballs throughout the game, besting Army 51-18 in that category.

The Hoyas were led offensively by Brendan Cannon (Fr., Haverford, PA/The Haverford School), who registered three first half goals for the Hoyas when the game was still close. Casey had two goals and two assists, and Nick Miaritis (Sr., Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) had two goals and an assist for the Hoyas. The Hoyas' offense was extremely balanced, with nine other players adding goals for the Hoyas.

Nerdalen led Army in scoring with two goals. Jim Wagner had a goal and an assist and Matt Scheel and Justin Bokmeyer each had a goal. Army's offensive leader and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate John Walker was held scoreless by the Hoyas, with fellow Tewaaraton finalist Brodie Merrill (Sr., Orangeville, Ontario/Salisbury School (Conn.)) often marking him one-on-one.

The Hoyas will face Maryland next Sunday, May 22, at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey. Game time will be either 12 noon or 3 p.m.
