Hoyas Fall To Pittsburgh In Baseball Doubleheader

Bethesda, MD--The Georgetown University baseball team (25-30; 7-17 BE) lost to Pittsburgh (30-20; 14-10 BE) on Thursday, May 19 at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas lost the first game of the doubleheader 6-1, and fell the second 9-5. Despite the loss, the Hoyas broke two single season records in the doubleheader. The team broke the Georgetown single season hit record, now totaling 541, and Michael Halloran broke the Georgetown single season appearance record, now with 24. Ryan Craft led the Hoyas, blasting two homeruns and totaling four RBI, three hits, and two runs.

In the first game, the Panthers got off to a quick lead and never looked back. Ben Copeland scored the first run of the game in the top of the first to give Pitt a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Pitt struck again, where Jim Negrych hit his first of two homeruns of the day, scoring Jimmy Mayer on the shot to centerfield. Copeland scored again in the fifth, and brought in Dan Williams to make the score 5-0. In the seventh, Negrych blasted his second homerun of the day to make the score 6-0.

Although the Hoyas were limited offensively, Ryan Craft blasted his first homerun of the day in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 6-1. That would remain the final.

Robert Brant earned the win for Pitt, pitching seven innings and allowing only three hits and one run. Georgetown's Eddie Pena was credited with the loss.

In the nightcap, it was a battle of the offense with a total of seven homeruns hit between the two teams. Georgetown struck first, where Andrew Cleary blasted the first homerun of the game to make the score 1-0. Georgetown added another run in the fourth, where Craft hit a sacrifice fly to score Timmy Jones and make the score 2-0.

In the fifth, Pittsburgh's offense took off, scoring four runs to go up 4-0. Copeland blasted a triple down the right field line to bring in Sean Conley, David Cline, and Edgard Sucre. Copeland was then brought across the plate by a Mayer single. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the sixth, where Sucre blasted a homerun to bring in Peter Parise. In the seventh, the Panthers offense exploded, blasting three homeruns. Williams, Copeland, and Negrych all tallied homeruns to extend Pittsburgh's lead to 9-2.

Georgetown added two more homeruns of their own in the eighth, where Craft blasted his second of the day to score Billy Quinn, and Joe Graziano rocketed his first homerun of the season to close the Panthers lead to 9-5. The score would remain the final.

Andrew Kuss earned the win for Pittsburgh, while Georgetown's Michael Gaggioli was credited with the loss.

The Hoyas and the Panthers will face off on Friday, May 20 at 1 p.m. on Shirley Povich field for the Hoyas final game of the season.
