Women's Soccer Wins 2005 Hoya Classic

Sept. 11, 2005

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - Georgetown women's soccer (4-1-1) defeats St. Joseph's (2-4-0) 3-2 to win the 2005 Hoya Classic held on North Kehoe Field.

Saint Joseph's came out to a quick start when SJU's Megan Schutt found an open Nancy Cook for the first goal of the game putting the Hawks up 1-0. The rest of the first half saw heavy play on both defenses. It was not until the 42nd minute of play that GU freshman Alex Gargano (Huntington, NY) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from senior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, CA). Less than three minutes later freshman Brittany Berry (Gaithersburg, MD) passed the ball to sophomore Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, IN) who set up the shot for junior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, CA). Skogen put the Hoyas up 2-1 going into the second half.

Saint Joseph's struck back against the Hoyas in the seventh minute of the second half when Nancy Cook scored a second goal for the Hawks, this one unassisted. The remainder of the half saw many opportunities for the Hoyas but they were unable to capitalize. Cook's goal sent the game into sudden victory overtime.

The Hoyas came out aggressive in the overtime period and Sara Jordan found Chrissy Skogen open again to score the game-winning goal. This was Skogen's second goal of the day and fourth goal of the tournament.

Goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, NY) posted four saves on the day and recorded her fourth win of the season.

Having won the tournament, the Hoyas nominated four players to the 2005 All-Hoya Classic Team. Those nominated included senior Captain Ashley Darcy (Coral Springs, FL), junior Chrissy Skogen, junior Shante Cofield (Summit, NJ), and freshman Alex Gargano.

In earlier 2005 Hoya Classic action today the American Eagles took on the Gaels of Iona. Iona won their first game of the season 3-1 over American putting them in second place in the 2005 Hoya Classic. American followed in third and Saint Joseph's finished fourth.

The Hoyas return to the Hilltop this Wednesday, September 14 to take on American at 3:00 p.m.
