WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team halted its seven-game slide with a hard-fought 3-0 (30-22, 32-30, 30-27) win over Morehead State on day two, Saturday, September 17, of the Black & Gold Challenge tournament held at Wake Forest University. The Hoyas earn their third victory of the season (3-7), while the Eagles fall to 4-8 on the year.
Junior middle blocker Annie Connor and senior outside hitter Rachel Nelson hit in double figures to lead Georgetown. Connor's stats included a team-high 15 kills and a match-high .522 hitting percentage (15 kills, three errors, 23 attempts). Nelson finished with 11 kills, 10 digs, three aces and two blocks. Laura Cox and Erin Peaks led Morehead State. Cox tallied a match-high 17 kills, while Peak posted 10 digs and five blocks.
The Hoyas hit .212 for the match, which included game one's .306, and Morehead State averaged .141. The Eagles held a slim 8-7 advantage in team blocks.
Sophomore Katie Nulty posted a match-high 14 digs at the libero spot, while sophomore setter Kate Fisher finished with a match-high 32 assists. She also had eight digs. Freshman Katherine Niesen paced the Hoyas in blocks with a match-high six. In addition, the middle blocker notched six kills.
Other Hoya performances included senior opposite side hitter Jenny Weed's five-kill, five-block, three dig outing, and freshman Jessica Buffum's 11-dig, four kill, three-ace showing.
Georgetown will wrap up the tournament at 5:00 pm. today. The Hoyas will meet South Dakota State.
