Georgetown Women's Soccer Scores 2-1 Road Win at St. John's

Sept. 30, 2005

Box Score

Sophomore Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) scored early in the second half and the Georgetown women's soccer team held on for a big conference road win, beating St. John's, 2-1, at Belson Stadium on Friday night.

It was the eighth-straight win for the Hoyas, breaking the all-time school record of seven, set by the 2002 squad that won a school record 11 games. The Hoyas improve to 10-1-1 overall with the win, including a 3-0-1 mark in the BIG EAST. St. John's falls to 5-6-1 overall and 2-3 in the league.

The game was tied at 1-all at the break, but the Hoyas came out strong in the second half, taking eight shots and two corner kicks. Sophomore defender Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) sent a long ball to Filauro, who picked up the ball from about 30 yards out. Filauro dribbled forward and took a blast from 25 yards out that beat St. John's goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera up high and to the left, giving Georgetown the 2-1 lead.

The Hoyas had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Filauro was taken down just inside the box and a foul was called. Junior midfielder Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) beat Red Storm goalkeeper Jaime Beran on the ensuing penalty kick with a low shot, giving Georgetown a 1-0 lead.

St. John's, however, responded, with Krystle Jalalian scoring in the 38th minute to tie the game.

Georgetown took 14 shots overall, with St. John's taking 15. The Hoyas took four corner kicks, holding the Red Storm to only one.

Georgetown concludes its two-game weekend road trip on Sunday, October 2 at Syracuse. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
