Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team lost a 5-3 decision to Syracuse today at Coyne Field. The Hoyas drop to 4-6 overall and a 0-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference while the Orange levels at 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the league. Junior Lauren Sheets (Lutherville, Md./Garrison Forest) scored two of the three goals for the Hoyas. These were the first goals scored in BIG EAST play for Georgetown.
Trailing 4-0, GU freshman forward Chelsea Aiken (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) took a rebound off a penalty corner to score the first goal for the Hoyas at 47:33. Less than 10 minutes later, Sheets took a penalty stroke to cut the deficit to two. A goal from Alison Babbitt would put the Orange up, 5-2. Sheets would take another penalty stroke to score the final goal for the Hoyas in the 5-3 loss.
Syracuse led 1-0 at halftime and would score three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Orange outshot the Hoyas, 17-5 and created 11 penalty corner opportunities to Georgetown's six.
Sophomore goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) started for the Hoyas posting six saves and allowing four goals. At the 49:12 mark, senior goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) stepped in allowing one goal while posting two saves.
The Hoyas return to action on Friday, October 6 when they travel to Rutgers for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
