Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team topped the visiting Connecticut Huskies, 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST action . The win marked the first-ever victory for the Hoyas over UConn in nine tries. Georgetown snaps a five-game winless streak and improves to 4-5-4 overall, 1-3-1 in league action.
Georgetown broke through early in the first half on a goal by junior Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) at 8:07. After a Connecticut foul near midfield, classmate Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) served a direct kick into the box at the far post. Senior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif./Long Beach Poly) one-timed the ball back to the middle of the box, where Filauro headed it off the fingertips of Husky keeper Stephanie Labbe for her second goal of the season.
Senior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) added a second goal for the Hoyas at 68:15. Skogen took a through ball from Filauro off a one-touch from freshman Norah Swanson (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and took on Labbe 1v1. Skogen sent a low ball to the lower left post for her fifth goal of the season and 22 of her career, tying Karin Ostrander for third all-time in Hoya history.
Georgetown junior goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./W. Hempstead) stopped four shots while Labbe was credited with one save for the Huskies.
The Huskies had two very good scoring opportunities in the second half but both shot attempts sailed over the cross bar.
Connecticut (5-7-1, 2-3-0 BE) out-shot GU 11-5 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Georgetown hits the road on Friday, October 6 to begin a four-game road trip at Cincinnati, beginning at 7 p.m.
