Box Score
Bethesda, Md. - Freshman lefty Andy Ferich (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tossed eight-plus innings and struck out 11 batters, allowing just one earned run in his first career start and Daniel Kennedy (W. Orange, N.J./Regis) got all three outs in the ninth to earn his first save of the season as the Hoyas earned a 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's. Georgetown, who sweeps the three-game weekend set from the Hawks, improves to 4-3 on the season.
Junior Mark McLaughlin (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle) finished 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Hoyas offensively.
Saint Joseph's (0-6) took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. Jeremy Jakubowski and Chris Hildreth collected back to back singles to start the game. Andriano Petrutz then doubled to right centerfield to plate Jakubowski. After hitting the next batter, Ferich struck out the next two hitters before getting a fly out to end the frame.
Georgetown answered and tied the score, 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Junior Brandon Davis (Poway, Calif./The Bishop's School) and sophomore Matt Harrigan (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) both singled to start the inning and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Matthew Maranges (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep). Senior Matthew Johnson (Bothell, Wash./Newport) then laced a one-hopper off the pitcher's throwing arm to reach base and plate Davis.
The Hoyas plated two unearned runs in the seventh to take a 3-1 advantage. McLaughlin ripped a single to right followed by a solid single up the middle by sophomore Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich., R.I./Bishop Hendricken). GU cleanup batter Ryan Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) then was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior rightfielder Drew Dargen (Edmund, Okla./Edmund North) then grounded a ball to the shortstop to score McLaughlin. The Hawk shortstop's throw to second base was wide and went into rightfield allowing Bouchard to score from second.
Saint Joseph's starter Don Werner fanned five batters over seven innings pitched, allowing one earned run.
Hildreth and Petrutz both finished with two hits for the Hawks.
The Hoyas return to the diamond on Tuesday, February 28 when GU travels to George Mason University for a non-league game. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
