Washington, D.C. -- Senior
Lucy Poole (Lutherville, Md./Towson) scored a career-high four goals and junior attacker
Sara Zorzi (Timonium, Md.) handed out a career-high three assists as the No.4 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team outlasted the No. 6 ranked Princeton Tigers, 9-7 on Wednesday at the Multi-Sport Facility. The Hoyas improve to 5-1 on the season matching the second best start in school history.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) stopped eight Tiger shots while Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), Stephanie Zodtner (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Laura Cipro (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) all collected three ground balls for the Hoyas who defeated Princeton for the first time since the 2002 regular season, a span of four years.
Junior attacker Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) gave the Hoyas some breathing room when GU held a slim 7-6 lead. With just under six minutes to go, Stanwick, the BIG EAST Conference's Pre-season Attacker of the year, tallied two goals in less than a minute to give GU a 9-6 advantage with 5:57 to go. Stanwick finished with three goals, all in the second half and four draw controls.
Georgetown trailed 2-1 after the first five minutes of action as Kristin Schwab and Kathleen Miller gave the Tigers a 2-1 bulge. The Hoyas scored the final three goals of the opening period as Poole posted two unassisted tallies before Zorzi handed out her first assist with 5:37 to go before halftime for a Paige Andrews (Newtown Square, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) marker as GU took a 4-2 lead at intermission.
Princeton cut it to 5-3 just two minutes into the second half on Schwab's second goal before the Hoyas scored the game's next two in a ten minute span for a 6-3 edge with 19 minutes left.
The Tigers made it 9-7 with 1:45 left when Katie Atkins found Schwab from behind the net off a quick restart, but Princeton wouldn't seriously threaten again.
Koch made four of her eight saves on Princeton free position opportunities, including two in the final four minutes of the game.
Princeton was just 1-6 on free position tries but the Tigers recorded 24 ground balls to the Hoyas' 17. The battle of the draw was even with each team winning nine.
Tiger goalie Meg Murray had 10 saves.
The game was televised live nationally by CSTV with Jason Knapp and former Georgetown standout Sheehan Stanwick Burch calling the action. Georgetown is in action again on Saturday, March 25, when the Hoyas host BIG EAST foe Rutgers on Saturday at the Multi-Sport Field at 1:00 p.m.
